The DVD that started it all... December 1, 2006 J. Kaplan 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I like to call this particular DVD, "The One That Started It All." Personally I have purchased many books and instructional videos on Card Magic previous to this one, but not one of them ever held my attention, and they just let me down. They all promise greatness, and impossibilities, but they never deliver. Crash Course in Sleight of Hand Card Magic Tricks is a well developed instructional DVD that promises to teach you something about card magic, but instead fueled the fire inside me to want to learn more. The DVD begins with basic grips and holds of the cards, and finishes with more complex moves. It gives you several tricks you will be able to use over and over again. It also teaches you the basic sleights that you can use to create your own tricks later on. The DVD builds on itself from the first minute till the end always making sure to review the previous steps, and teach you the new ones. You can tell that this DVD was well thought out before it went into production. The teaching is done by the Ellusionist creator himself. He structures the DVD in such a way, that you get you get to view the "finished product" first, then back track and see how it was all done, step-by-step. Teaching this way grabbed my attention, kept it, and then expanded upon it to the point that I needed more. It is done is such a way, I would say it is good for all ages from teens to adults. Also the overall quality of the DVD, from the camera work and sound to the user selectable DVD menus is exceptional. At first I may have felt overwhelmed with all there was on the DVD, but after I watched the DVD in its entirety, then went through each move one last time, I had this want and this need to know more. It was no long a want or a hobby, now it became a mission. It became a mission of mine to master each of the moves. At this point I currently own many DVD's and books from Ellusionist and some other producers. My expectations for this DVD were well exceeded with this particular one. I now expect similar or better quality for all Magic Instructional DVD's out there. Ellusionist has yet to let me down. This DVD is great on it's own for someone who just wants to learn the basics, and learn a little more than just the, "pick-a-card" tricks. It can also easily create a gateway into the world of magic as a whole, along with creating a new found respect for the Magicians that create these tricks. I give this DVD a 5 out of 5 for all aspects of it. I never take the time write reviews for any product I have ever purchased, but I almost feel as if I owe it to the makers of the DVD to do so. Buy this DVD for yourself; I know you will love it.
Great Place to Start November 28, 2006 Nicholas (Kentucky, USA) This is an amazing place to start your journey into the vast world of card magic. Brad goes into great detail on many different moves and tricks, and being able to hear his personal tips was an invaluable opportunity to improve my magic. This dvd was one of the best tools that I used to start off my serious magic journey and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to do the same.
Why haven't you clicked "Add to Cart" yet? November 28, 2006 Eric Lott (Davison, MI United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This was the very first video on card magic I ever purchased. Five years and dozens of videos and books later, this is still the DVD I recommend for people who want to get into card magic. Anyone can perform a card "trick." But if you want to create magic with a deck of cards, in my opinion and experience, you have to master four things: 1. Control a card 2. Force a card 3. Perform a double-lift 4. Palm a card Crash Course 1 adequately teaches you how to do those four things and SO much more. Controlling a card is giving the impression a card is "lost" in the deck. In reality, the magician knows exactly where the card is. The in-jog control taught in CC1 is one of the easiest and most effective ways of controlling a card. I use it on a regular basis. Forcing a card is giving the impression that the spectator freely selected a card. What actually happens is the magician deceptively makes the person take a specific card. While I don't use it that often, the corner-short is a great way to make a spectator take a specific card. It is a great utility that requires absolutely no sleight of hand. If you can riffle down the side of a deck of cards, you will be able to force any card you want using a corner-short card. The double-lift, which is probably the most utilized sleight in card magic, is also taught in CC1. A lot of people new to magic find palming a card very difficult to do. In reality, the sleight itself is relatively easy. Doing it while a spectator or crowd is watching is the tricky part. Brad Christian teaches you a very easy way to get a playing card into palm position. While there are several very good tricks taught on the DVD, I'm only going to highlight the two that I perform EVERY TIME I perform card magic. Here Then There This trick alone is worth the price of this DVD. It is arguably one of the greatest tricks you can do with a deck of cards, period. I perform it every time I have a deck of cards in my hand. A card is clearly and cleanly placed inside the hands of a spectator's hands. Another card is shown and instantly, without any funny moves whatsoever, the two switch places. The method is brilliant and the last thing in the world a spectator would think of. There is one sleight in particular you will need to be able to perform to do this trick. However that sleight is taught on the DVD. This is the same trick David Blaine performed for the Dallas Cowboys in one of his earlier television specials. Card In Hand A deck of cards is shuffled, a card is selected and the card is lost in the deck. Rather than the magician finding the card, the spectator is asked to find the card. An indifferent card is handed to the spectator. The spectator is then asked to return the indifferent card to the deck where they believe their original card is. The spectator is wrong. After going through the entire deck, their original card is nowhere to be found. They were holding onto their card the entire time. This DVD is for those who are just beginning card magic or who are relatively new to the art. We've all heard the expression you have to walk before you can run. Crash Course 1 is the DVD that will provide you with a solid foundation in card magic. You will not be disappointed. I give this DVD an enthusiastic two thumbs up! Eric Lott

My name is David from Singapore. I'm a beginner totally new to magic. After watching less than a disc, I'm doing magic with the effects that destroy human being senses. Great presentation from Brad, step by step explanation that considers a beginner's knowledge. - David Loh, Singapore.
Crash Course: Sleight of Hand Card Tricks. A review. January 28, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Crash 1 is an excellent DVD. There. I said it. I figured I get through with the gushing on how awesome this DVD is, right off the bat. Why is it so awesome, you ask? This DVD is THE guide to beginning card magic. It takes you from not knowing how to hold a deck in your hands, to reading someone's thoughts. I had a little experience with cards prior to this DVD, but I admit that it was minimal at best. Sleights: The single greatest thing about this DVD is the extremely solid foundation it lays out for you. You learn all of the essential sleights that all other card magic is built upon. Brad teaches you all about the mechanics grip, breaks, double lifts, false cuts, shuffle controls, jog controls, and much more. These sleights are the essence of card magic itself. Tricks: The real meat of this DVD is the heart-stopping tricks that you will learn. Crash Course: Sleight of Hand Card Tricks is THE resource for the beginner magician. It gives you the foundation you need for future study, and deadly weapons to use now. I highly recommend it to anybody.
